Jim White’s Fishing Stage and Waterfront Premises

Built ~ 1900s by Jim White of Change Islands, White's fishing stage and waterfront premises is located on the east side of the North Island of Change Islands. The building is the largest fishing stage remaining on Change Islands is unique in that it is fully operational with a wharf, stores, stage head, boardwalks and flakes. It is located in a beautiful cove on the northeast end of the North Island and is frequently visited by tourists to see an operational stage still used to process, salt, and store the finish fish product.

The building is a beautiful example of a large two story traditional inshore fisherman premises where a variety of fishing activities was carried out - cod (traps, hook and line, and jigging); herring (nets); salmon (nets); lobster (traps); inshore sealing (4-5 miles on the drift ice); and associated support bait fishing. Today, the interior of the building is fully equipped with both traditional and modern fishing gear still used in carrying out an inshore fish (herring, mackerel, squid, etc.) and crab fishing business.
