Sam Smart’s Fishing Stage, Slip and Stagehead

Sam Smart's Stage is located on the main tickle of Change Islands on the southwest shore of the south island. The building is a beautiful example of the traditional inshore fisheries premises where a variety of fishing activities were carried out, including work related to cod (traps, hook and line, and jigging), herring (nets), salmon (nets), lobster (traps), inshore sealing and associated bait fishing.

The original structure, build over 100 years ago, had two stories. It was reduced to one story about 50 years ago. Don Smart, Sam's son, fished with his father for many years and carried on this inshore fishing tradition after his father died in the 1970's. Herb Bown and Maureen Woodrow completely restored the stage in 1998-1999.
