Sam Smart’s Root Cellar

This root cellar was build by Sam Smart over 50 years ago and is located in the back of Sam's property on Diamond Point. During the restoration it was discovered that Sam's son, Don Smart, had constructed a smaller root cellar inside the original structure. Sam used birch bark as the insulation material between the sods and the interior wooden log frame. Most of the birch bark was still in excellent condition. This is a very large sod cellar measuring over 20 feet square and the entry is from the top.
