Just prior to the closure of the East Coast cod fishery, this group of fishermen from Change Islands had a boat load of cod from their cod trap. A cod trap is box-shaped with a length of net called a 'leader' extending from the box. This 'leader' will guide the cod into the entrance of the cod
trap. If there were more cod in the cod trap than what their boat could carry, they would signal to fishermen on shore by raising a home-made flag. Other fishing boats would then arrive to take the extra fish home for their own use. In this photo, other boats have arrived to take the extra fish. Photograph by Change Islands resident
