The Atlantic Halibut is a member of the righteye flounder family. These flatfishes almost always have their eyes on the right side. They can grow up to 2.4 m in length and can weigh up to 320 kg making the Atlantic halibut the largest of the flatfish. The Atlantic halibut is found from Southwest Greenland and Labrador to Virginia and the Eastern Atlantic. While the Atlantic Halibut is now the most highly prized flatfish in the northwest Atlantic, there was a time when it was in low demand and even considered a nuisance fish. They have been commercially fished in Newfoundland since the 1800's. Each halibut is individually hand-crafted and may differ slightly from the photograph shown.
