Harp seals are found in the Arctic and Atlantic Oceans ranging from the Cara and Berents Seas to the waters surrounding Greenland and Newfoundland. Harp seals can grow as large as 2 meters in length and 180 kg in weight and are the most commercially important seal. Males are silver gray with black heads and black "harp-shaped" markings on their backs. Females are slightly smaller in size than males and are paler and have markings that are less distinct. At birth, the pups are covered with a long, fluffy white fur from which they derive their common name of "whitecoats." Each seal is individually hand-crafted and may differ slightly from the photograph shown.
